Kitty Blessing

For those of you that know me, you know I pretty much have a love/hate relationship with our cat. For those of you new to my story, I’ll give you the cliff notes to get you up to speed.

You need to know I’m not a cat lover, I’m a dog person. I will tolerate cats, but they aren’t my first choice.

In June 2024 my husband came upon a tiny kitten that had been dumped in our woods.

She was only three weeks old and she followed him to the house. She ended up staying.

It turned out that she had the THREE most contagious ringworm viruses. Guess who got ringworms?!! Not the man that brought her home. Just me and the veterinarian. It was the worst thing I have lived through. I will spare you the photos. Just know I got them EVERYWHERE!! I ended up having to get two prescriptions to get rid of them. That did not make her more endearing to me.

I did feel sorry for the little thing though. Because of the severity of the ringworm viruses we had to dip her twice a week in a sulfur bath for 12 weeks. She was so tiny we had to make her a cone out of Solo cup so she wouldn’t lick the sulfur off her fur.

After all that, she stayed with us. I tried coming up with a good name, but my husband insisted she was already used to us saying, “Come here kitty, kitty.” So, Kitty is her name. It doesn’t seem to bother her one way or the other. She usually ignores us when we call her name.

The end of May 2025 we went on a graduation trip for one of my granddaughter’s high school graduation. We went on a cruise and arranged for a young man to come over at least every other day to check on Kitty. We had never left her alone for more than a day and we would be gone for 10. And, it would be the first time she was totally alone. I just felt like someone needed to come and check on her to make sure everything was okay.

The second day of the cruise we received a message that the water heater had sprung a leak and water was all over the house. When we got to our first stop my husband flew home to take care of things. The young man did what he could, but we knew that we couldn’t leave everything wet and in a mess until we got back from the cruise. All the floors have now been replaced and we are working on going through everything and getting rid of what we don’t need, what was damaged and putting the rest back where it belongs.

Even though I am not a cat fan, I will say that I am very thankful that the Lord had Kitty dumped on our property a year before we went on this trip. If she had not been at the house the damage to our home would have been much worse. The water would have been spewing out of the water heater for over a week. All the rooms in the house would have had to have been replaced rather than just three. There would have been time for the water to soak into the sheetrock and mold and mildew would have been settled in.

See we had a dog when Kitty showed up on our doorstep. But at the time we didn’t know we would have to put her down in January due to health issues. We would not have had a pet that needed someone to take care of it. The house would have been empty.

But because God is an awesome God, he sent Kitty. Yes, I had to endure the ringworms and countless bites and scratches, but just as in any life, we have to go through some trials to get to the blessings. Blessings don’t always come in pretty packages tied up with a bow. Sometimes they come in a little package of fur that purrs when you scratch her neck and rub her belly.

Waiting for a belly rub.
